Eastern Europe Vacation - 2005
Day 9
May 8, 2005
Salzburg and Hallstatt, Austria
We started the day at the Hohensalzburg, Salzburg's fortress. Around 1525 AD, Salzburg was beseiged by the Turks. Despite all their efforts of food rationing, the people were down to only one ox. The town commander came up with an idea - parade the ox along the fortress walls; the following morning, the cow would be painted a different color and again paraded along the fortress walls. This fooled the Turks into believing that Salzburg had plenty of food for the long haul. The Turks then withdrew. Since then, the people of Salzburg have been known as Stierwascher - Oxen washers!
Arriving in Hallstatt, we toured the town a little, eating dinner at fastof Zauner.
