The Second Month

Our little Marina isn't quite so little any more! She's growing so fast! Just mid-March, I had weighed her and she was already 11.8 pounds! Her constant feedings are definitely paying off. She went through two growth spurts on schedule (3rd and 6th weeks).

After spending the whole first month "confined" at home, we felt Marina was strong enough to see more visitors. The Kys: Tom, Kimmy, and their newborn son Matthew (who is one month older than Marina) came to visit; as did Scott Frank, a former coworker of Mark's at Transamerica; and finally Ted, Elise, Sydney, Charlie and Savannah Shickler. Ted and his family had wanted to visit earlier, but the entire family had been sick at various times the last 2 months. This sure was one of the toughest flu seasons! We finished up the month by visiting the Kys at their home in Irvine.

One thing we discovered with Marina - she loves to be draped over the shoulder! Marina was being quite fussy one day and Mark thought that maybe she had gas and needed to be burped. He had put her in her usual position on his shoulder, but she squirmed her way higher until she settled in and eventually fell asleep! This became her favorite position with Mark, as noted by several pictures taken of the two of them.

Another thing I was able to do with her - get her to smile! She had some spit up earlier in the month and I wanted to clean her tongue but she wouldn't open her mouth! I kept saying to her "Show me your tongue, blaahh." She kept watching me until I noticed the corners of her mouth curl into a smile and eventually into a wide-mouthed grin! Now Mark and I constantly do that with her and her reactions are just adorable!

She's also started cooing this month. She had said something that sounded like "Apu!" and also "aaahhh" and "eewww". But alas, she hasn't yet said "poopie"; I would still like that to be her first word!
